Trends in partnering and fertility among the Indigenous population: the role of education

Detail from Gulach (2006) by Terry Ngamandara Wilson

This seminar will present data from the 2006–2016 censuses to examine trends in partnering and fertility for Indigenous Australians. We focus on how fertility and partnering rates have changed for the Indigenous population over time, and examine variations between Indigenous people living in remote and non-remote parts of Australia, and by education level. We then determine the extent to which rapidly increasing educational attainment among the Indigenous population has contributed to changing patterns of partnering and fertility.

Authored by: Danielle Venn (Research Fellow, CAEPR) and Heather Crawford (Research Officer, CAEPR)

Bio: Danielle Venn is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research at ANU. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Melbourne and has previously worked on a range of labour market and social policy issues in academia, government and at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
