Indigenous Affairs in a social media age: Q&A session with Luke Pearson on IndigenousX

Policy making is changing in the social media age, and perhaps nowhere more so than in Indigenous Affairs. Social media has empowered a diverse range of Indigenous people to have a voice in policy issues, often with significant impact on policy, such as in the case of the opposition that emerged on Indigenous social media to the Recognise campaign.

IndigenousX has had an important role in amplifying the perspectives of Indigenous people beyond and within established media organisations. The rotating @IndigenousX twitter account was launched in March 2012 and has more than 49,000 followers. IndigenousX also provides a publishing platform, both on its own website and through syndication by The Guardian.

In this Q&A session, Luke Pearson will discuss IndigenousX and the role of Indigenous media in shaping policy.

Luke Pearson is a Gamilaroi man, who founded @IndigenousX in 2012. Luke has worked as a teacher, mentor, counsellor, public speaker, collaborator, mediator, facilitator, events manager, researcher, evaluator, reporter and much more. Luke's passion for IndigenousX stems from his belief in the need to improve Indigenous media representation in Australia and to have a platform for individuals to tell their own stories in their own words.
